Dr Carolyne Keenan C. Psychol

Registered Psychologist

I developed an interest in human Psychology at a very early age.  I started out with volunteering at school, working with young people with additional learning needs and epilepsy.  I went on to receive my Psychology BSC (Hons) from Cardiff University.  My early career started in a drug and alcohol service in Manchester and then I moved to London to complete my Professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology at City University, London.  My Doctoral research explored experiences of Self Harm using You Tube videos and offered suggestions about how services could better support and understand people who self-harm.  Since then I have worked in a range of settings and continue to strive to build my experience and knowledge.  I am committed to continuing professional development and attend training courses and supervision to ensure I am able to offer the best service to my clients.

I have worked in Psychiatric rehabilitation, drug and alcohol treatment services, acute adolescent psychiatric inpatient settings and with children and young people in the care system.

I work integratively which means I draw from a range of therapeutic models to create a care plan that best fits the needs of the people I work with.  This includes therapeutic models such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion Focussed Therapy (CFT).  Whilst I ensure that my interventions are evidence based and grounded in theoretical knowledge I firmly believe that the therapeutic relationship is the most important factor in fostering change.  I do not believe that one approach will be right for everyone and will work with you to make sure that the treatment you receive is the best fit for you.

My approach is direct but warm and humorous and my focus is always on empowerment and encouraging self-compassion.
